Beyond Jewellery
Saurabh Gadgil’s ‘Choosing Gold’ Reflects on Family Business, Leadership and the Making of PNG Jewellers
Dr. Saurabh Gadgil, Chairman and Managing Director of PNG Jewellers, has published his memoir Choosing Gold, documenting his journey in the family business and the decisions that shaped the modern evolution of the jewellery company.
Published by Penguin Random House India in August 2026, the 262-page book traces Gadgil’s journey from 2000 onwards, examining the challenges, setbacks and choices that accompanied his years in the business. Rather than presenting the story solely through the lens of PNG Jewellers, Gadgil has described the book as a personal account of the experiences and lessons that shaped him as a business leader.
The memoir also explores the complexities of working within a family-owned business, including the transition between generations and the need to build professional systems as responsibility moves from one generation to the next.
Speaking about younger generations entering family businesses, Gadgil said they should join only when they have a genuine interest in the business. He also emphasised the importance of creating systems that allow the next generation to gradually assume responsibility while retaining the freedom to introduce new ideas.
The book draws on Gadgil’s 25 years in the business, covering themes including decision-making under pressure, organisational change, resilience, leadership and the transition from people-dependent operations towards more structured systems.
Choosing Gold: The PNG Jewellers Story is priced at ₹699 and is currently available through PNG Jewellers and online channels. Penguin Random House India lists the book as an August 2026 publication.
For a jewellery industry increasingly shaped by questions of succession, professionalisation and the transition of legacy businesses, Gadgil’s memoir offers a personal account of how one family enterprise navigated those changes.
